The San Gabriel Castle is located in the city of Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote.
The San Gabriel Castle was built in the XVI century to defend the island from the north-african incursions.
It was built with diamond-shaped corners. In 1585 was burnt during the Morato Arráez pirate attack. It was later rebuilt by the famous italian engineer Leonardo Torriani, by orders of the king Philip II.
Next to the castle you might find the Puente de Bolas, one of the most emblematic buildings in Arrecife, famous for being the only drawbridge with these characteristics conserved in the Canary Islands.
