The remains from the shipwreck of the American Star are localized on the Northwest of the municipality of Jandia, nearby Garcey Beach, on the West Coast of Fuerteventura.
One of the most interesting and original excursions you might take on the island of Fuerteventura is to visit the remains of the “American Star”.
The “American Star” was a luxury transatlantic built in 1939, the biggest passenger ship in Europe, at the time. It only has 48 meters less than the famous Titanic.
This boat has many names during its lifetime, it was even used during the II World War it was weaponized and prepared to transport soldiers. At the time it was known as USS Westpoint. At the end of the war the ship was returned to its original owners who rebuilt it and converted it into a luxury ship. The boat had many owners and routes until, in 1993, it was bought in Thailand for 2 million dollars, in order to build a floating hotel called “American Star”. During a strong storm in 1994 while it was being towed by a russian ship, it shipwrecked. A few days after it was found near Playa Garcey, it was looted many times and then became a touristic attraction for Fuerteventura.
At the beginning the boat was standing but due to the waves it started to fall to one side and later broken by the attrition of the waves. Nowadays the ship is nearly sunken.
It’s advisable to get to the American Star to rent a car on the island and head to Garcey Beach.
If you’re coming from Pájara you should head to Ajuy and take the exit on the left to Jandia, the dirt road has many rocks so we recommend you to go with a 4x4.
The surrounding area belongs to the Spanish Army so you might see many posters saying “Forbidden to Cross”.
