San Pedro Church

The San Pedro Church is located on Güimar’s historic centre in the Southeast of Tenerife, in the Canary islands.

The origin of San Pedro Apostol Matrix Church was the “El Tanque” hermitage, constructed between 1602 and 1608 my Pedro de Savalia. Due to the large concentration of people on the area of Obispo de Canarias a licence was issued allowing the construction of such church.

For many years, the parish grew, both in dimension and number of pictures and worshiping objects. On 1765 already had three chapels, the El Rosario, the El Carmen and Ánimas.

Due to the bad condition of the building restoration and extension works started in 1794 and finished on 1805. This works had the intervention of many architects from which we should highlight the contribution of master Pedro Juan Agustín García that carves the facade on stonework inspired by the baroque style. The tuscan’s columns and arches that separate the naves from the interior of the temple.

The tower was raised between 1821 and 1828 by Juan Nepomuceno Verdugo following a classical style although the watch crown was added later.
