The Santa Catalina Castle is located in Santa Cruz de La Palma, the capital of the island of La Palma.
The actual Santa Catalina Castle was built between 1676 and 1701. It has a square shape with many triangle bastions with a diamond shape on the edges. This a great example of the italian military renaissance architecture from the XVI century.
It has wide embankment, a prison, a warehouse and a wooden drawbridge over the pit to access the castle.
This monumental defensive building constituted an authentic wall belt and strongholds that protected this sea-facing city.
The Santa Catalina Royal Castle was declared historic national monument.
