The Peñón del Fraile is a symbolic element to the city of Puerto de la Cruz.

The Peñón del Fraile is in reality a colossal volcanic rock, but for the locals it’s actually more than that as it’s considered a special site.

Its name is due to a well-known friar from the XVIII century that used to climb this rock to isolate himself in prayer. The crag was ornamented with a staircase and an embankment with a green cross from 1813 by Luis Lavaggi.

According to the legend, among is cracks there’s a treasure from a famous pirate.
From the Peñón del Fraile you might have one of the best views from the whole coast.
